The government on Friday adopted documents that will enable for a tender to be called to select a second landline operator. Currently, the state enterprise Telekom Srbija has the only license. Serbia to get second landline operator Telecommunications Minister Jasna Matic announced that she expects the tender to be called within a month. Some experts, however, have criticized the move, and are warning that the timing is not right. Matic specified that a single new license would be issued, that the starting price would not be defined, and that bidding would be organized within the tender procedure to select the best offers. The government's decision pertains to issuing of a landline license that would be based on Serbia's existing broadband network, according to the minister. The tender is to be called by the Republic Telecommunication Agency (RATEL), based on a set of rules covering the conditions for the tender, that the Telecommunications Ministry will adopt at the start of next week. Matic specified that she expects the tender to be announced by the end of the month, "while the whole procedure should be done by the end of the year".
