Tourists numbers down eight percent

1.2 million tourists visited Serbia between January and the end of July, an eight percent drop on the same period last year. The latest figures from the Statistical Office indicate that, of these 1.2 million, 828,398 were domestic visitors, which is 13 percent down on the same period in 2008. Administrative centers were the most popular destination for visitors at 372,306, followed by other tourist places (305,165) and mountain centers (263,929). Between January and July this year, there were 4.2 million overnight stays, three percent down on 2008. Overnight stays by domestic tourists fell seven percent to 3,298,199, while stays by foreigners rose 15 percent to 897,154. The most popular places for overnight stays were spa towns (1.2 million nights) and mountain centers (1.1 million), while foreign visitors favored administrative centers (557,039) followed by other tourist places (173,960).
