U.S. Steel Serbia will hold meetings between management and unions regarding a pension plan for employees due to be made redundant. The management earlier announced plans to ax between 150 and 200 jobs in the company’s administration, and Independent Union President Sinisa Prelic expects the U.S. Steel management to offer a favorable pension plan to the outgoing workers. Another foundry in the Smederevo-based complex is getting ready for work, according to the steel giant, which adds that there will be work in both foundries at least until October. The second foundry is being turned on because of renovations to the one in Kosice. Prelic said that this meant that about 2,000 workers would be able to return to regular full-time work. “What is important is that this has nothing to do with the economic crisis, this would have happened even if the company had been working at the level of a year ago. The goal is for all companies within the corporation to look alike, or to have the same balance between administrative and production staff,” he explained. “A number of workers will be able to work overtime in order to finish on time. Automatically, this will mean higher wages for these 2,000 workers, bringing their wages close to what they were receiving before the world economic crisis hit,” he said. “We had smaller wages for four or five days this month, some people were pulled to work the first shift, they did not have shift work, and this will all automatically mean that there will be more money for these 2-3,000 employees,” Prelic said. Work at the U.S. Steel Serbia company will depend on the amount of orders the company receives after October. Company Communications Director Nemanja Brkovic said that the fact that the second foundry had been switched on meant that the situation on the world steel market was improving.
