Union officials have praised the new government measures for combating the economic crisis, but say that they will not avert a fall in living standards. However, certain municipal officials have criticized the decision to cut subsidies to local self-governments. New Belgrade Municipal President Nenad Milenkovic said that local authorities had not been consulted regarding the decision to cut parliament funding to the municipalities. New govt. measures receiving mixed reaction Milenkovic said that any cuts in subsidies would impact on their functioning. Krusevac Mayor Dragan Azdejkovic said that the planned cuts would undermine the work of local self-governments, especially outside Belgrade. He said that for his town specifically, it would mean no participation in major investments this year, and that the sorely needed reconstruction plans for the town may have to be put on ice. However, unions are united in their view that the new package is a major improvement on the earlier idea of “solidarity” measures. President of the Alliance of Independent Unions Ljubisav Orbovic said that the measures would inevitably lead to a fall in standards, especially because of higher excise on petrol. The Nezavisnost Union stated that the mew measures were better than the previous ones, especially for the poorest section of the population. Economists believe that unlike the earlier proposals, these measures will not invoke the wrath of the public, because, they say, there is no denying that the aim of the plan is to rein in budget spending.
