Serbia is the only country in the region that will receive budget support from the European Commission, Deputy PM Bozidar Djelic told daily Novosti today. Djelic said that besides support from Brussels, Serbia could expect EUR 500mn of budgetary assistance from European commercial banks, while the European Investment Bank had earmarked EUR 250mn for small and medium-sized businesses in Serbia. "Crisis won't stop us," says Djelic He said that despite the crisis that was shaking the EU, Serbia had not shelved its strategic goal—EU membership, adding that “nothing can affect it, nor prevent its fruition. Not even this difficult and unprecedented economic crisis that can only hamper and slow this path.“ The minister said that the government’s European Integration Council’s message was to apply for EU membership this year, though for the time being what mattered more was unfreezing the Stabilization and Association Agreement. He said that Serbia would do its utmost to reach the Schengen white list by the year’s end and that positive overtures were coming from Brussels, with a final decision expected in the latter half of 2009.
