Finance Minister Diana Dragutinovic will propose a change in the law for excises in order for the government and tobacco producers to reach a deal. She said that the amendment, voted for by the Socialist Party of Serbia and opposition, was not in line with the government excise policy. “Excise law amendment to be changed” “The amendment violates our agreement with cigarette producers,” she said, adding that she is “embarrassed that the state did not keep its promise.” Dragutinovic said that the only thing that can be done is to propose new changes to the law for the parliament to discuss. Officials of three international tobacco companies operating in Serbia, Phillip Morris, British American Tobacco and Japan Tobacco International, called on the government to immediately suspend the implementation of the new excises on cigarettes. Daily Danas even quoted unnamed sources stating that if the changes were not revoked, Philip Morris would move production from Serbia to Russia.
