The Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) has accused Mladjan Dinkic of sabotaging a strategic energy deal with Russia. DSS Vice President Borko Ilic warned on Sunday that "insistence of the economy minister on haggling over the price" of the Serbian oil monopoly NIS, is only an excuse for bringing down the so-called gas agreement with Russia. DSS: Dinkic schemes against energy agreement "This planned destruction of Serbia goes as follows: Serbia has no gas pipeline, a certain oil company gets NIS, with planned deadline of December 2008, while the ratification [in parliament] of the agreement with Russia is only supposed to be a smokescreen for this plan, in order to fool the public," the party official said. "The price of NIS was determined two years ago by an independent privatization advisor engaged by the Republic of Serbia," Ilic recalled in a statement sent to Tanjug news agency, noting that "for Serbia, it is more important to get a strategic partner who is in the possession of his own energy sources." "Dinkic's manipulation is that he, allegedly, wants to haggle over the price of NIS so that this could be his excuse for toppling the gas agreement," he said. Earlier this month, Dinkic, G17 Plus leader, said that Deloitte and Touche consultants were hired to appraise the value of NIS by the beginning of September, "so that based on this negotiations on the price can be conducted with Russians". In January this year, then Russian President Vladimir Putin, his Serbian counterpart Boris Tadic and then Serbian Premier Vojislav Kostunica signed the agreement in Moscow. Besides determining that a part of the South Stream pipeline will run through Serbia, the contract states that Russia's Gazprom will acquire a 51 percent stake of NIS for the price of EUR 400mn. After announcements from the Serbian economy ministry, Russians have rejected the possibility to further negotiate the price, saying that a protocol determining the sum is a binding part of the contract.
