According to the Trade Ministry, purchasing power fell in March, compared to February. Therefore, monthly earnings were just enough to cover the minimal “consumer basket.” Purchasing power falls in March In March, 1.02 percent of average national wages had to be put aside to cover the average “consumer basket,” and 0.65 percent for the minimal basket. According to the Statistical Office, the average wage in March was RSD 30,809 (EUR 382), the average “consumer basket” was RSD 31,313 (EUR 388), the minimal was RSD 19,925 (EUR 247), which is an increase of 1.9 percent for the former and 2.3 percent for the latter. The Ministry stated that this had been brought about by a fall in earnings and the increase in the prices of all products and services that come into the category of both “consumer baskets.” Retail prices in March increased by 1.2 percent, while the cost of living increased by 1.6 percent. The average wage fell 0.6 percent nominally, and 2.1 percent in real terms. The “consumer basket” was RSD 569.13 (EUR 7) or 1.9 percent more expensive in March, while the minimal basket was up by RSD 447.89 (EUR 5.5) or 2.3 percent . Groceries cost more in both baskets: RSD 497.36 (EUR 6.15) in the average basket, and RSD 384.57 (EUR 4.8) in the minimal basket. The price of almost all products in “consumer baskets” rose, including wheat, vegetables, fruit, meat, fish, dairy products and eggs. Above average purchasing power was measured through both “consumer baskets” in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Pancevo, Smederevo and Zrenjanin. The average monthly wage covered the minimal “consumer basket” in all towns where figures exist, while the average basket was covered only in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Pancevo, and Smederevo.
