Makao III Address: 11 Safarikova St., Belgrade Phone: +381-11-32-24-733 Working hours of the restaurant and kitchen: from 11 a.m. to 11.30 p.m. City transportation: bus: 65, 77, 95; trolley: 40, 41; Credit cards: Visa, Dina, Master, Maestro Parking: 1st & 2nd zone Menu: in Serbian, English and Chinese Staff speak: Serbian, English, Chinese Vegetarian menu: yes Main courses: from 500 to 1,500 dinars Delivery: yes, same prices The walls are decorated with traditional details such as large Chinese fans, red lanterns and vases with gold applications. For our entrée, we decided on the shrimp chips – although this is more in the form of a snack. These large chips of neutral taste can be eaten as they are or dipped in curry from the big saucer cup (although they’re definitely best with the honey and tomato sauce we tried in a different restaurant). After the appetizing but small-portioned hot & sour soup, we continued with the spring rolls which have always been excellent in Makao, stuffed with fresh, crunchy stir-fried veggies and thinly sliced chicken fillets. We suggest you look for the specialties of the house which are, for some unknown reason, listed at the back of the menu, after the desserts. Ordering any one (or more) of them is almost sure to be mistake-proof, and this was our choice: sweet-tasting caramelized veal with almonds, mixed with pineapple bits and bamboo in a sweet & sour sauce. For the second main course, we had a huge portion of crispy breaded chicken with a hint of curry, a meal recommended by the waiter because of its unique sauce prepared from several types of exotic fruit. Unfortunately, the heavy aroma of onions blocked out all else, so much so that we even asked the waiter if he’d served the right dish. Other impressions include a swift service, polite staff and poor ventilation. Meal for two, without wine: 1,800 dinars. This third in the chain of Makao restaurants has the same type of kitchen as the other two, but a somewhat nicer and more pleasant interior.
