Today marks the 16th anniversary since the fall of Vukovar in 1991. The eastern Slavonia town surrendered after three months of fierce battles between armed Croatian formations and Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) and Serb paramilitary forces, which left much of it in ruins. 16 years since fall of Vukovar The commemoration program this year will include remembering events of war, more than 500 Vukovar resident still listed as missing, many wounded and dead, and those who fled the war to emigrate. Vukovar is a symbol of war damage and suffering in Croatia, which this year observes commemorations after a Hague Tribunal ruling in the Vukovar Three case, which is viewed as proof of injustice toward the 260 victims of the Ovcara war crime. Croatia's state, military and political top brass in expected for the ceremonies, as well as some 30,000 citizens. Still, 16 years after the war, Vukovar is trying to become a place where relations between its ethnicities, Croats and Serbs, are normal. Although only a few ruined buildings remain to remind of the brutal war, and incidents have been brought down to a minimum, Vukovar is missing employment, economic development, experts and capital, and today lives as a city of memorials, pensioners and war veterans, a symbol of suffering. Meanwhile a mass dedicated to the victims of Vukovar has today been served in a memorial cathedral in Hiroshima, Japan, Beta news agency reported.
