Protesters spent a peaceful night sitting and sleeping in public squares in Lisbon and Porto, the Lusa news agency reported. Participants in demonstrations over the housing crisis and rising living costs set up dozens of tents on Lisbon’s central Rossio Square on Saturday evening and announced that they intended to remain there.

According to trade union figures, tens of thousands of people took part in a march through central Lisbon on Saturday. The march passed peacefully, and police did not release their own estimate of the number of participants.

The main demands of protesters in Lisbon include more affordable housing, lower rents, higher wages, and increased pensions. Similar protests are also taking place in other European cities in response to rising living costs, increasingly unaffordable housing, and calls for improved education.
