"Everything will go to hell"
The seizure of an Iranian cargo ship near the Strait of Hormuz marks the first known case in which the United States has used force in enforcing its maritime blockade, according to Sky News.
As stated, this is described as a “very tense moment in the war,” especially since the two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran is set to expire on Tuesday evening.
Developments at sea, the British outlet adds, clearly show that the Strait of Hormuz has become the main flashpoint of the conflict.
Iran briefly allowed merchant vessels to pass through the strait on Friday, but on Saturday reversed that decision and again threatened attacks on ships, accusing the United States of violating the ceasefire.
On the other hand, Washington has not lifted its own blockade of Iranian ports, introduced in response to Iranian actions, further escalating tensions in one of the world’s most important maritime routes.
U.S. forces also intercepted and seized the Iranian vessel “Touska” in the Gulf of Oman over the weekend.
According to U.S. military reports, the ship had previously been disabled by fire from the destroyer USS “Spruance”, after which Marines from helicopters took control of the vessel.
The Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of the world’s oil and gas passes, has in recent weeks become a key flashpoint of the conflict after the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran in late February, and Tehran responded with threats and restrictions on shipping.
An analysis by Sky News suggests that further militarization, blockades, and naval clashes could mark a new, more dangerous phase of the war, with potentially major consequences for global energy security.
