Day in Review – May 6

U.S. President Donald Trump said today that the war against Iran is going “incredibly well” and that the American military is making “significant progress.”

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that its forces in the Gulf of Oman opened fire on an Iranian-flagged tanker and disabled it.

Iranian airstrikes have damaged or destroyed at least 228 facilities or pieces of equipment at U.S. military sites across the Middle East since the start of the war, The Washington Post reported.

Trump: “If they agree, it’s over. If they don’t, we bomb.”

Speaking at the White House during an event honoring mothers of American soldiers, President Trump compared the Iran operation to what he described as a “successful operation in January” targeting Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela.

“We are in — I call it a skirmish, because that’s what it is, a skirmish, and it’s going incredibly well, just like we did in Venezuela, where it was quick, finished in one day, and it’s going just as well — I would even say better — but it’s going very well in Iran. It’s going very smoothly, we’ll see what happens,” he said, according to CBS News.

The U.S. president also stated that he had temporarily suspended the operation to secure navigation through the Persian Gulf, known as “Project Freedom,” in order to create space for continued diplomatic talks with Iran.

According to him, negotiations are ongoing, and any outcome will depend on whether a deal acceptable to the United States is reached.
