America orders urgent evacuation of personnel
The U.S. State Department has authorized American government personnel not involved in urgent duties, along with their families, to leave Cyprus, while the embassy in Jordan announced it is canceling appointments and has instructed staff to seek shelter.
The measure in Cyprus was taken due to the war in Iran and the limited ability of the U.S. embassy to assist Americans in areas under the control of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, NBC reported, noting that the U.S. does not recognize the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
The travel guidance states that the embassy in Nicosia has limited capacity to assist U.S. citizens, and that local police detention facilities “do not meet international standards.”
Advisory for U.S. citizens in Jordan
The embassy also advised that American citizens in Jordan, which borders Israel to the east, should seek shelter wherever possible, NBC reported.
Yesterday, the U.S. embassy ordered non-essential personnel and their families to leave. The current travel advisory for Jordan is “Reconsider Travel,” one level below the highest warning of “Do Not Travel.” The reasons cited for these measures are “terrorism and armed conflict.”
The U.S. embassy also highlighted areas of highest risk, including Manshiyat al-Ghayat, Ruwaishid, the borders with Syria and Iraq, the city of Rusayfa, and the settlement of Baqa in Ain Bashi.
Alert in Pakistan
At the same time, the U.S. State Department announced that it has ordered non-essential personnel in the consulates in Karachi and Lahore to leave the country with their families.
Their evacuation follows protests outside the U.S. consulate in Karachi in which 10 people were killed and 60 injured, after some demonstrators attempted to storm the consulate following the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, Al Jazeera reported.
In total, 24 people have been killed in Pakistan in clashes between protesters and security forces. The U.S. stated that there is no change in the status of the American embassy in the capital, Islamabad.
