Ayatollah Ali Khamenei buried

Iranian Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was buried early Friday morning local time in his hometown of Mashhad in northeastern Iran, following several days of commemorations and funeral ceremonies in Iran and Iraq, bringing an end to a period of several days' mourning.

The final burial ceremony was held in the prayer hall of the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad, after the coffin was carried around Imam Reza’s tomb as part of the funeral rites, Press TV reported.

The funeral prayer over his body was held in the shrine’s courtyard, followed by a private farewell ceremony for Khamenei’s family.

After the burial, Iranians and Muslims from around the world offered prayers for him.

The funeral prayer was led by the late Ayatollah’s eldest son, Seyyed Mostafa Khamenei, who performed the ritual prayers over the bodies.

According to Press TV, slogans such as “Death to America” and “Death to Israel” could be heard during the procession accompanying Khamenei’s body.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed along with several members of his family on February 28, the day the war against Iran launched by the United States and Israel began.

Among those killed were the wife of the new leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei, the late leader’s son-in-law, his daughter, and his 14-month-old granddaughter, Press TV recalled.

Khamenei’s son Mojtaba assumed the position of supreme leader, but he has not appeared in public since then and did not attend the funeral ceremonies.
