Historic victory for AfD; Far right writes a new chapter in political history PHOTO
“We have made history in this state,” said Ulrich Siegmund, the leading candidate of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), after his party won a state election for the first time in the German federal state of Saxony-Anhalt.
He added that he was “extending a hand” to all other political forces, but only to those willing to join him in implementing a clear political shift, Deutsche Welle reports.
“What you cannot count on from me is abandoning my own values in order to come to power,” Siegmund said.
In that case, he said, he would not be prepared to enter either a coalition government or a minority government.
According to her, the strongest party always has a mandate to form a government.
“Our hand is always extended,” Weidel said, adding that the party’s state branch makes its own decisions.
Turnout reached 80 percent
Voter turnout in the state elections in Saxony-Anhalt stood at 80 percent, according to ZDF data.
The AfD won a decisive victory in today’s state elections in Saxony-Anhalt, securing 44.5 percent of the vote according to an ARD projection conducted by the Infratest dimap polling institute.
The AfD thus achieved its best-ever result in a state election and became the strongest political force in the state parliament, after receiving 20.8 percent of the vote in the 2021 election. Far behind it was the CDU (Christian Democratic Union of Germany).
The party of state premier Sven Schulze secured a historically low 18.5 percent of the vote.
That represents a major decline compared with the 2021 state election, when the CDU, led by longtime premier Reiner Haseloff, won decisively with 37.1 percent of the vote.
According to the projection, The Left is the third-strongest party with 9.5 percent of the vote, remaining below its previous worst result in Saxony-Anhalt, which stood at 11 percent.
The Greens follow with nine percent, ahead of the SPD (Social Democratic Party of Germany), which won eight percent of the vote.
The SPD is therefore also approaching its worst result to date.
In the 2021 election, it received 8.4 percent. The BSW (Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance – Reason and Justice) won five percent of the vote and is still uncertain about securing seats in the state parliament, while the FDP (Free Democratic Party), with two percent according to the projection, failed to clear the electoral threshold.
