Greenland on a "knife's edge"; Civil war possible

Greenland, it seems, is slowly sliding toward civil war, ever since U.S. President Donald Trump publicly announced intentions for the United States to take over the island, which is under Danish control.

According to reports from the British Daily Mail, which spoke with locals, serious brawls have begun to break out among Greenland’s inhabitants. It is also noted that the island is full of weapons.

Jorgen Boassen, the head of a local masonry company who vocally advocates the “Make Greenland American” movement, was already assaulted last month.

But this was not the first time he had been physically attacked since he was engaged by Trump’s envoys during their visit to the Arctic as a guide and unofficial ambassador.

Boassen told the British newspaper that tensions in Greenland have escalated so dangerously that he seriously fears the world’s largest island could be on the brink of “civil war.”

Disputes over whether Greenland should remain part of Denmark, which has controlled it for more than 300 years, or agree to U.S. annexation, are now so intense that even families are breaking apart over it.

Boassen says he was forced to part ways with his fiancée, who shared a home with him and their teenage daughter in Nuuk, because her family members despise his campaign for Americanization.

He also claims that it is no coincidence that his former partner was dismissed from her high-ranking position at Air Greenland, the nationalized Danish airline for which she had worked for 30 years, shortly after he attended MAGA events celebrating Trump’s inauguration in Washington.

“Danes control 95% of all businesses here and persecute people like me with independent dreams of cooperation with America,” Boassen said yesterday.

“Those who truly want Americans to take over must remain silent. There is an atmosphere of fear,” Boassen remarked.

Although Greenland has the highest suicide rate in the world, serious violent crimes are relatively uncommon.

However, as Trump extends his ambitions northward from Central America, Boassen believes the country is on a “knife’s edge.”

According to the Daily Mail, citing local sources, the island is so full of weapons that a civil war scenario is entirely possible, as almost every home in Greenland has a hunting rifle.

While he does not envision a scenario in which Greenlanders would arm themselves against each other, Kuno Fenik, a Greenlandic legislator who advocates for independence, agrees that the divisions are becoming increasingly sharp.

After centuries of harsh colonization, Fenik says he believes that the vast majority of Greenlanders yearn for freedom from the Danes.

Like Boassen, he cites public opinion polls, such as the one from last year that showed 84% of the population supports independence.

However, that does not mean they want to be governed from Washington.

Still, Fenik also emphasizes that a civil war could break out in Greenland. “The tension is so high—and if they (his opponents) can attack me, they can attack anyone.”
