Battle for the Arctic starts? Trump doesn't give up on Greenland; NATO agrees – Russia and China under watch
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that negotiations are underway with the US, Denmark, and Greenland regarding the future of the island, and that the Alliance is aligned with US President Donald Trump on Arctic security, Anadolu reports.
Speaking at the Reagan Institute in Washington after a meeting with Trump at the White House, Rutte explained that the discussions are focused on Greenland’s future status and limiting access by Russia and China.
“I agree with Trump’s assessment that there is a significant risk of increased Russian and Chinese engagement in the Arctic. The President is right – we must defend ourselves,” he said.
He noted that NATO allies had already agreed in January at the World Economic Forum that the Alliance must play a stronger role in the Arctic, which includes the protection of Greenland. In this context, Rutte mentioned the launch of the “Arctic Guardian” initiative, a NATO project aimed at strengthening coordination among allies and improving defense in the region.
Trump does not back down
This statement followed remarks by Acting Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen on Thursday, who said it is clear that Trump has not abandoned his ambitions regarding Greenland.
Recall that three days ago, Trump sharply criticized NATO allies who did not come to the aid of the United States in the Iran conflict and reignited the dispute over Greenland.
“You know, it all started, if you want to know the truth, with Greenland. We want Greenland. They don’t want to give it to us. And I said: ‘Goodbye,’” said the US President, who threatened to withdraw from the military alliance.
