As reported by Večernji list, one of the key obstacles in the negotiations between American and Iranian officials is Washington's demand that Iran abandon uranium enrichment, which Tehran firmly rejects.

US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he had warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week not to take any steps that could derail negotiations with Iran over the nuclear deal.

"I told him that would be inappropriate at this time because we are very close to a solution," Trump told reporters gathered in the Oval Office.

However, according to Reuters, all that can change at any time.

Israel earlier rejected a New York Times report that claimed Netanyahu had threatened to derail US-Iran talks by attacking Iran's main uranium enrichment facilities.

Citing sources familiar with the situation, the US paper said Israeli officials fear Trump is so eager to reach a deal with Tehran that he could allow Iran to keep key nuclear facilities - which is unacceptable to Israel.

Of particular concern in Israel is the possibility of an interim agreement that would allow Iran to continue operating its nuclear facilities for months or even years until a final deal is reached.

US officials, according to the same New York Times report, are concerned that Israel could launch an attack on Iran without warning.

US intelligence estimates say Israel could launch an attack within just seven hours.

The Israeli Prime Minister's office reacted to that report, calling such claims "fake news".

A New York Times spokesman, however, responded that the paper was behind the published content.

"Our reporting on this issue is based on conversations with people directly familiar with the situation. We are confident in what we have published," said the newspaper's spokesperson.

According to the New York Times, Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer and Mossad chief David Barnea met with Steve Witkoff, Trump's special envoy, in Rome on Friday.

They then traveled to Washington where they held a meeting with CIA Director John Ratcliffe on Monday, and Dermer met with Witkoff again on Tuesday.

US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said on Monday that she had a "very honest conversation" with Netanyahu about the talks.

She also said that Trump instructed her to convey to the Prime Minister of Israel "how important it is that we remain united and allow the process to continue."
