Shocking reversal in Washington; Ultimatum issued
US President Donald Trump said that American airstrikes on Iran would continue in the coming days, warning that they would become increasingly intense if Tehran does not agree to a deal. He added that he does not currently want negotiations with Iran.
The US president also said that contacts between the two sides have not been cut off and that Iranian officials are still trying to reach an agreement.
"The message was simple – you have to make a deal or there will be nothing left for you," Trump said, adding that he believes Iran has no choice but to negotiate.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump said US forces would continue the strikes "until he decides it is enough," arguing that Iran’s military capabilities have been seriously weakened.
"The only way to negotiate with them is through a demonstration of military strength," Trump said.
He said the main objectives of the US operation are to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, maintain freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, and further weaken Iran’s military capabilities.
The US president claimed that even if the attacks were stopped immediately, Iran would need decades to rebuild its destroyed military infrastructure.
"Next week will be even worse"
Speaking about possible future targets, Trump said that Iran’s energy infrastructure has not been targeted so far, but that option has not been ruled out.
"I am leaving the energy infrastructure for last. Tonight we will hit them very hard, the same will happen in the coming nights, and next week it will be even worse if they do not come to the negotiating table," Trump said, adding that potential targets could include power plants and bridges.
Asked about the possibility of a ground operation, Trump did not want to provide details but said there are "others who can lead such a campaign."
Trump also said that the agreement on Iran’s nuclear program reached during the administration of former US President Barack Obama was a "worthless document" that, he claims, paved the way for the development of nuclear weapons.
