Shocking reversal in Washington; Ultimatum issued

US President Donald Trump said that American airstrikes on Iran would continue in the coming days, warning that they would become increasingly intense if Tehran does not agree to a deal. He added that he does not currently want negotiations with Iran.

The US president also said that contacts between the two sides have not been cut off and that Iranian officials are still trying to reach an agreement.

"The message was simple – you have to make a deal or there will be nothing left for you," Trump said, adding that he believes Iran has no choice but to negotiate.

In an interview with Fox News, Trump said US forces would continue the strikes "until he decides it is enough," arguing that Iran’s military capabilities have been seriously weakened.

"The only way to negotiate with them is through a demonstration of military strength," Trump said.

He said the main objectives of the US operation are to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, maintain freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, and further weaken Iran’s military capabilities.

The US president claimed that even if the attacks were stopped immediately, Iran would need decades to rebuild its destroyed military infrastructure.

"Next week will be even worse"

Speaking about possible future targets, Trump said that Iran’s energy infrastructure has not been targeted so far, but that option has not been ruled out.

"I am leaving the energy infrastructure for last. Tonight we will hit them very hard, the same will happen in the coming nights, and next week it will be even worse if they do not come to the negotiating table," Trump said, adding that potential targets could include power plants and bridges.

Asked about the possibility of a ground operation, Trump did not want to provide details but said there are "others who can lead such a campaign."

Trump also said that the agreement on Iran’s nuclear program reached during the administration of former US President Barack Obama was a "worthless document" that, he claims, paved the way for the development of nuclear weapons.

He said that US intelligence agencies are closely monitoring all known Iranian nuclear facilities, including a site that has been the subject of speculation in recent days as a possible part of the nuclear program, warning that it would be attacked if any significant activity were detected.

"The Strait of Hormuz is blocked only for Iranian ships"

Speaking about maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, Trump said the passage remains open for international shipping, but is blocked for Iranian vessels.

In an interview with US television, he also said that he initially believed a change of government in Iran was possible, referring to his February 28 speech, when, announcing the start of the US-Israeli military operation against Iran, he called on Iranians to take control of their country after the bombing campaign ended.

Asked whether he truly believed at the time that regime change could occur, Trump answered affirmatively, saying he had not expected Iranian authorities to be willing to use force against their own population.
