Parliament is today discussing amendments submitted to a draft law set to determine the maximum number of employees in the state and local administrations. Opposition MPs announced that they would not support the proposed laws because they see them as leading not lead to significant savings, but rather as creating more unemployment, and believe that Serbia would get a "partisan administration". Parliament debates draft on state administration The MP group gathering ethnic minority parties decided condition its support to the law with the adoption of its amendments. The draft envisages that the maximum number of employees in the sector should be 28,400. This would cause ten percent of those currently employed in the state administration to lose their jobs - 2,800 of those working full time, and another 600 based on other criteria. On the local level, 15 percent of the current workforce should be laid off according to this law. 5,648 out of total 37,789 employees in the local administration would lose their jobs, and would receive severance pay and compensation for unemployed. The basic criteria for determining the maximum number of employees has been four full time administration workers per 1,000 residents.
