Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic will today embark on a week-long visit to several African countries. The main purpose of the tour, he said, will be to prevent new recognitions of the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo and Metohija, but also to improve economic cooperation. Jeremic starts week-long visit to Africa "During the one-week tour of the African continent, I will visit Nigeria, Gabon, the Congo, and Kenya. The main topic will be the situation in Kosovo and Metohija. At this point, the pressure is being exerted on African countries to recognize the Kosovo's unilateral independence. The majority of African countries has not done that and it is extremely important for us that they do not change their stands," Jeremic said. He told journalists that Nigeria and Gabon will become members of the UN Security Council as of January 1, 2010, adding that this is the reason why "their position is of particular importance to us". "Another relevant topic of talks during these visits will be Serbia's economic cooperation with these countries," Jeremic said, adding that there is a great potential for economic cooperation and that these are large countries which had once been Serbia's significant partners. "There is a possibility for us to renew our presence in the African market," Jeremic said, adding that he will open a toll bridge in the Congo for which the Serbian company Mihajlo Pupin built a system for toll collecting. Jeremic said that Serbia's good political cooperation with these African countries "should be used in an economic sense as well".
