Sejdiu, Thaci welcome OIC resolution

Kosovo President and Prime Minister Fatmir Sejdiu and Hashim Thaci have thanked the OIC member-states for their adoption of a resolution on Kosovo. Sejdiu and Thaci said that the document was of exceptional significance to the province. Sejdiu, Thaci welcome OIC resolution At a specially organized joint news conference, Sejdiu said that the resolution was an expression of commom positions and policy of the Organization of the Islamic Conference’s member-states. “That’s why I think that the unity in adopting the resolution will result in its common implementation,“ said the president. “We’re very grateful to all the states that support the state of Kosovo. Even though only 13 of the Islamic Conference’s 57 states have recognized Kosovo’s independence so far, the adoption of this resolution with a consensus is a clear message and a further, greater encouragement to all these countries to recognize the Republic of Kosovo in the near future,“ said Thaci. The prime minister said that the resolution had highly rated the big progress in Kosovo since the unilateral declaration of independence, and called on the international community to continue helping the province’s development. According to the Kosovo leaders, the resolution was a big triumph, both in political and economic terms. Daily Koha Ditore writes that the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) adopted a “softer“ resolution on Kosovo. The daily states that the adopted resolution acknowledges the progress in strengthening democracy for the services of peace and stability at home and in the region, welcomes the UNMIK reconfiguration and the deployment of EULEX in line with the UN secretary-general’s directive, and calls for furthering bolstering of the Kosovo economy. However, Koha also notes that there was no call to recognize the province’s unilateral independence. Speaking to fellow Pristina daily Zeri, Albanian Foreign Minister Lulzim Basha stressed that the OIC had adopted the resolution unanimously. “The resolution of support for Kosovo was adopted without changes to the original text and was adopted unanimously by all 57 OIC member-states,“ said Basha. The daily adds that the adoption of the resolution was welcomed by Kosovo President Fatmir Sejdiu, Kosovo foreign policy chief Skender Hyseni and Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha. In its main story “Albanian Diplomacy Beats Serbia“, daily Kosovo Sot writes that Kosovo should thank Albania on its success in initiating and adopting the OIC resolution. “Although Serbia lobbied against it, the voice of Albanian diplomacy was more persuasive in Damascus, and the Conference ended with a very good stance for the Kosovo state,“ states the daily. Serbian officials also voiced their satisfaction with yesterday’s resolution, stating that it was neutral and that it contained no call to recognize Kosovo.
