Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says that Russia supports a Kosovo solution that is acceptable for both sides. Russia supports a solution based solely on international law, Lavrov said after a meeting with his Serbian counterpart Vuk Jeremic. Jeremic, Lavrov talk Kosovo They agreed that Serbia and Russia had the same stance regarding the Kosovo status issue “that must be based on international law and be the result of a compromise between Belgrade and Pristina.” After a meeting in Moscow, they told a press conference that a solution for the Kosovo crisis could only be legitimate if approved by the United Nations Security Council. Lavrov said no fabricated deadlines could be imposed on the negotiations, and that UN Resolution 1244, as well as the principles of the Contact Group, had to be respected. After Jeremic’s second official visit to Moscow, Lavrov said that the two countries had had very good political relations all year and hoped that they would remain strong. Lavrov said that the meeting’s main focus was Kosovo and the approaching Troika report to be submitted to the UN Security Council. “Of course, we will share our thoughts on bilateral relations, much needs to be done in order to reach high level agreements,” the Russian foreign minister said. Jeremic said that Serbia was intent on doing everything it could to find a compromise for the Kosovo situation. “We are prepared to be flexible and constructive, but there are ‘red lines’ that we cannot cross,” the Serbian foreign minister said, adding that retaining Serbia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity was vital. He said that Serbia was very grateful to Russia for its support over the issue. Jeremic said that this was a very critical moment for Serbia and the region, and that it was important to continue extensive consultations during the coming rounds of negotiations. “Serbia is entering the last round determined to do everything it can to find a negotiated solution,” the Serbian foreign minister said. He said that Serbia was prepared to make one more concession to the Albanian side in the next round of talks. However, he said that the step would not imperil Serbia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
