The agency was quoting a statement made by the Serbian Commissariat for Refugees and Migrations.

The migrants were located about 300 meters from the border, "and there has been no indication that they would be allowed to cross it," the report said.

The night passed without incidents, the Commissariat stated, adding that strong police presence was observed on the Croatian side of the crossing.

These migrants arrived in Serbia as a transit country on their way toward the EU.

They on Monday afternoon protested because they were unable to continue their journey towards Western Europe legally, via Croatia.

The N1 broadcaster said that they, after attempting to break through a police blockade, the migrants started moving across fields in a bid to break through a fence and illegally cross the Serbia-Croatia border.

According to this report, the Croatian police deployed along these fields "will likely prevent their entry to Croatia."

In Belgrade, Interior Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic said that migrants "will not be allowed to block highways and border crossings because they are unable to enter a country that doesn't want to accept them."

He also announced that it was "only a question of time" before new draft laws on asylum and foreigners are submitted to the Serbian National Assembly.
