BELGRADE The ruling Serb Progressive Party (SNS) has called for "activities of the National Bank of Serbia (NBS) to be investigated". If any irregularities were found, those responsible should be held accountable, the party said in a statement on Wednesday. Ruling party calls for investigation into activities of NBS The SNS qualified as “unacceptable and hypocritical” the evaluations of representatives of the previous government that amendments to the law on the national bank would cause a collapse of the financial system and lead to instability of the national currency in the foreign exchange market. According to the SNS release, “the very criminal economic, monetary and fiscal policies” pursued during the rule of the Democratic Party (DS) contributed to the “huge problems” that Serbia is facing today. This can be seen in the fact that over the past four years, the domestic currency has lost about 50 percent of its value against the euro, as well as in the fact that more than a quarter of a million citizens are out of work, the SNS said. The SNS requires that the competent state authorities “check the accuracy of the information according to which the NBS was damaged by more than EUR 300 million owing to the machinations of the bank's management, headed by its Governor Dejan Soskic.” The party also said it would “be good” for Soskic to say who were the “tycoons with whom he had contacts when he was allegedly asked to use part of Serbia's foreign exchange reserves to finance their business ventures, which he was taking about himself.” Dejan Soskic (file) Tanjug
