Serbia's Deputy PM Bozidar Djelic said Friday that adoption of the Danube strategy by the EU represented a historic day for the Danube region. "The adoption of the Danube strategy is a crucial moment, turning this river, which has been a border and the location of many battles for a long time, into a river of peace and cooperation," the Danube strategy national coordinator said at a reception for the participants of a Danube conference held at the Belgrade City Hall. Adoption of Danube strategy “historic day” “The support Croatia received for its EU membership bid at the summit of EU presidents and prime ministers on Friday is extremely important and represents good news for Serbia, the countries along the Danube and the entire Europe,” he stated, congratulating Croatia on its EU accession scheduled for 2013. “Serbia is grateful to its European partners for allowing it to take part in the Danube strategy by coordinating infrastructure and road and railway transport with Slovenia, even though it is not yet a candidate for EU membership,” the deputy prime minister noted. "You can be sure that we will work in the interest of all the countries that are part of the Danube strategy and all the EU members," Djelic asserted. The two-day conference, which began Friday evening and will last until June 26, focuses on tourism development in the lower Danube region, since it could generate progress in this underdeveloped area. The event is organized by Djelic's office, the Serbian and Bulgarian Economy Ministries, the Romanian Regional Development and Tourism Ministry and the Danube Competence Centre. The participants of the conference embarked on a ship in Belgrade on Friday and will spend the next two days sailing down the Danube until they reach Vidin, Bulgaria. Bozidar Djelic (FoNet)
