The international community will continue to be present in Kosovo in the form of EULEX, says UK Foreign Secretary David Miliband. Miliband stressed that that presence would, in future, be reflected in the functioning of the EU rule of law mission. Miliband: EULEX throughout Kosovo “The next step is full deployment of EULEX throughout Kosovo. That will happen, and it will be an important step forward,” he said. After his visit to Belgrade, the foreign secretary met with senior Kosovo officials in Pristina. Miliband pledged his country’s continued support to building a democratic and multi-ethnic Kosovo. Prior to Miliband’s arrival, Kosovo media speculated that the first visit by the UK foreign secretary to the province since the unilateral declaration of independence would be used to exert pressure on Pristina to give ground in terms of the conditions Belgrade is seeking in return for the green light to deploy EULEX in northern Kosovo. In this regard, Miliband said that he could not decide how the UN would pursue its dialogue with the two sides over the six points of the UN seceratry general’s letter, but that he did not believe that the Kosovo government could sign anything that could lead to the “red line” that it had drawn earlier, being crossed. “Nor will we seek anything that would mean crossing that line,” the foreign secretary assured.
