BELGRADE A protest against Serbia's disintegration and a draft declaration on protection of Vojvodina's rights has been held today in Novi Sad. The Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS), Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS), students of the Novi Sad University, trade unions and civil organizations joined the protest. Rally against Vojvodina rights declaration The most important reason for the protest is the declaration on the protection of the constitutional and legal rights of Vojvodina, recently announced by Vojvodina Executive Council President Bojan Pajtic, which caused a stir among the opposition in the Vojvodina Assembly and spilled over to the national authorities and opposition. Serbia's Deputy Prime Minister and Serb Progressive Party (SNS) leader Aleksandar Vucic said the SNS respected Vojvodina's autonomy, guaranteed by the Constitution, and the Constitution itself and would not allow anyone to "play separatist games." The Democratic Party (DS) believes the protest in Novi Sad is an attempt by the national authorities to hide their own incompetence by fighting non-existent separatism. Pajtic on Thursday denied accusations that he was promoting separatism. SNS deputy leader Igor Mirovic has said that key requests at the protest will be the withdrawal of the draft resolution and Pajtic’s resignation that will lead to an early provincial election. He added that the protest would be peaceful regardless of “possible incidents directed by authors of the declaration”. (Tanjug) B92 Tanjug
