Polish government takes control of state-owned media
"It's important to the president that state media be impartial, objective and credible," the agency quoted Duda's spokeswoman Malgorzata Sadurska.Reuters reported that the European Union is "unlikely to punish Poland over two widely criticized laws." Instead the organization "hopes talks between Brussels and Warsaw will resolve the issue," European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said.
The EC will debate the rule of law in Poland next week, but Juncker said it was unlikely that Article 7 of the Treaty of the European Union - a supervision procedure that could lead to a suspension of Warsaw's voting rights - will be applied.
The Polish government will now directly appoint directors of the public media. Directors of Poland’s state television, TVP, channels have resigned in protest over the new law.
