Ukrainian officials have told the United States that they will not use the armed forces against the protesters, said the Pentagon.

WASHINGTON Ukrainian officials have told the United States that they will not use the armed forces against the protesters, said the Pentagon. Previously, Washington expressed its dissatisfaction because Kiev deployed a special police force to break up the protests. U.S.: Ukraine won't use army against protesters U.S. Defense Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel spoke with his Ukrainian counterpart on the phone, called on the government to exercise restraint and warned of the potential damage that would be caused if the army were included in any way. Defense Minister of Ukraine Pavel Lebedev said he would convey the message directly to President Viktor Yanukovych, whose resignation is sought by the opposition because he withdrew from signing an agreement with the European Union and calls for closer ties with Russia, said Reuters. "Minister Lebedev said that the position of President Yanukovich is not to use armed force against demonstrators," a Pentagon spokesperson said. In one of Washington's sharpest comments so far, a representative of the White House urged Yanukovich "to listen to people and to continue the European integration of the country into the European Union." U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry denounced strongly the use of force, while a representative of his ministry said that Washington was considering introducing sanctions against Ukraine.
