President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree abolishing the state news agency RIA Novosti, and establishing a new one in its stead.

MOSCOW President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree abolishing the state news agency RIA Novosti, and establishing a new one in its stead. The new agency, dubbed as "global", is called Rossia Segodnya (Russia Today), and will take over all property owned by RIA Novosti in the country and abroad. Putin "liquidates" one of largest state news agencies Its focus will be "informing foreign audiences about Russia’s policies and the way of life," it has been announced. By the same decree, Rossia Segodnya will also include the state-run Voice of Russia Radio. The new agency will be headed by Dmitry Kiselyov, the Kremlin said. During the 1990s, Kiselyov was known as a liberal journalist, "until he started working in state television outlets," said reports, adding that "the independent, private media criticized him for openly supporting the ruling United Russia party and President Putin." Voice of Russia is reporting that the president’s decree "reformed and did away with an entire bulk of state media," abolishing the State Fund of Television and Radio Programs, placing it under control of All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company.
