MOSCOW Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said that a military scenario in Syria should be avoided at any cost since it would led to an explosion of terrorism. He called on the authorities and the opposition in Syria to "work together" to remove terrorists from their country. Russia: Intervention would cause "explosion of terrorism" "We believe it is essential to do everything to avoid a military scenario. I call on the government and the opposition to unite their efforts to drive the terrorists out of the country," Lavrov said after a meeting with Syrian counterpart Walid Moallem in Moscow on Monday. He warned of the danger of the spread of terrorism in the region and new waves of refugees that would be caused by a possible military intervention, stressing that "there is still a possibility for a political solution." "More and more politicians and senior government officials share our opinion that the use of force would lead to an explosion of terrorism in Syria and neighboring countries," Lavrov said. The Russian minister added that Damascus has "always" been ready for peace talks. Muallem confirmed that Damascus was ready for peace talks, and thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin for his support. Muallem has come to Moscow to discuss the situation in Syria with Lavrov. The country is threatened by air strikes after the authorities were accused of allegedly using chemical weapons. According to the United States, the Syrian regime used chemical weapons on August 21, in an attack killed more than 1,400 people. The U.S. Congress should on Monday make its stance on the proposal of U.S. President Barack Obama to intervene militarily in Syria. This proposal was supported by France, while Russia from the beginning strongly opposed any military action against Syria and warned that it could destabilize the entire region.
