NEW YORK, GENEVA There are growing concerns in Syria after rebels and President Bashar al-Assad’s regime traded chemical weapons accusations. The UN has condemned the attack, Israel has confirmed it while Iran has accused the rebels of using chemical weapons. The Syrian government and rebels on Tuesday accused each other of using chemical weapons near the northern town of Aleppo for the first time since the conflict erupted two years ago. Ban and Ahmet Uzumcu, Director General of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, "shared deep concern about the alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria," the UN said in a statement, AFP has reported. UN Spokesman Martin Nesirky said that the UN was "aware of the report" that chemical weapons had been used in Syria, but said "we are not in a position to confirm it." In the meantime, the World Health Organization (WHO) has announced it will today send medical supplies and equipment to Aleppo but could not confirm the allegations that chemical weapons have been used. “At this stage we cannot confirm the use of chemical weapons, or what agent, if any, was used,” WHO Spokesman Tarik Jasarevic told Reuters.
