GENEVA United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay has expressed concern over the forced closure of Roma (Gypsy) refugee camps in France. "I'm concerned about the recent forced closure of Roma camps in France, which affected hundreds of people, making them even more vulnerable and exposing them to a series of concerns about human rights," Pillay said in a speech marking the opening of the 21st session of the meeting of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. UN official concerned about French Roma French police last month expelled hundreds of Roma from refugee camps in the suburbs of Paris, the AFP news agency reported. The French authorities explained their actions by the fact that the abandoned camps posed a threat to the health of their visitors, adding that they were often located near roads and railways, which also could jeopardize the security of Roma who are placed in them. "I admit that the government has taken some steps, but further work needs to be done in order to normalize the situation in the context of national strategies for Roma integration in accordance with international human rights law," said Pillay.
