Reports: Clashes in Syrian town claim more than 100 lives

The Syrian army attacked the town of Hama in central Syria when dozens of people were injured. Some news agencies are saying that as many as 140 died.

The Syrian army attacked the town of Hama in central Syria when dozens of people were injured. Some news agencies are saying that as many as 140 died. Earlier in the day, the BBC put the figure at 80 deaths, while CNN says 67 died. Reports: Clashes in Syrian town claim more than 100 lives "The army and security structures attacked Hama and opened fire on civilians, killing 95 people," said Ammar Korabi of the National Organization for Human Rights. The same source said that throughout the coutnry at least 121 people died while dozens were wounded during the day, reported AFP. At the same time, Syrian news agency SANA is reporting that dozens of armed persons were in the town's roofs, shooting at the citizens. The news agency also said that armed groups in Hama set police stations on fire, destroying public and private property, and setting up barricades at the town's entrance. The military's move, which included tanks, came after the town was kept under siege for almost a month, in response to some of the most fierce anti-government demonstrations. Human rights activists expect the anti-government demonstrations to grow during the Muslim holy month. The same activists say that more than 1,600 civilians died since the protests started, while the government is discrediting its opponents referring to them as terrorists and foreign extremists.
