The United Nations have announced that they are looking into a complaint regarding the treatment in prison of Bradley Manning. The young American soldier has for months been held in solitary confinement without being charged, after he was arrested as a suspect believed to have leaked classified information to the whistleblowing website WikiLeaks. UN: Complaint alleges U.S. whistleblower is tortured Manning has not made a public statement about the allegations. The UN office set up to combat torture said that Manning's supporters sent a complaint that described the conditions under which he has been kept in prison as being tantamount to torture. Pentagon, however, denied that the suspect was receiving bad treatment, saying the U.S. army was making sure he was safe and ready for trial. If they find that that Manning is in fact being mistreated in prison, the United Nations could request that the United States stop all forms of abuse against the soldier, said reports. Earlier, media speculated that the U.S. authorities might be trying to pressure Manning into implicating WikiLeaks editor-in-chief Julian Assange in taking part in a conspiracy. The website and several of its media partners worldwide have been publishing U.S. diplomatic cables since late November.
