UK wants EU to "embrace new Turkey"

British Foreign Secretary David Miliband supported Turkey's full EU membership during his visit to Ankara, despite opposition from some EU members. Miliband told Reuters that Ankara's full European Union membership would bring economic dynamism into the bloc, help solve its energy security problems and build closer ties between the West and the Muslim world. UK wants EU to "embrace new Turkey" The news agency says that leaders in France and Germany believe that the Muslim country is "too poor and too culturally different to fit into the bloc". "Britain is more convinced than it has ever been that the strategic decision to support Turkey's accession to the European Union is the right one. It is good for Europe as well as for Turkey," Miliband said. He added that Turkey should work to speed up its reforms, but at the same time stressed that the country made significant progress in the past 30 years, with a "new Turkey" being created. The EU bloc, Miliband was quoted as saying, should be more open and embrace the long-term benefits of Turkey's membership.
