The European Parliament has put itself on a collision course with EU member states after it voted to stop allowing people to work more than 48 hours a week. MEPs voted 421 to 273 in favor of the core proposal to cap the working week. European Parliament votes to end work opt-out Some 15 EU states, including Britain which has been arguing strongly to keep the provision, currently have an opt-out clause which permits people to work more than 48 hours if they want to. Last-ditch talks between Strasbourg and EU member states are now expected to begin over the European Working Directive, with the outcome uncertain.
