UN agencies are responding to a bitter central Asian winter that has killed hundreds of people in recent weeks. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees is distributing tents, blankets, plastic sheets, sleeping mats, lanterns and soap to more than 200,000 Afghans who are returning to their homeland from exile in Pakistan and Iran. UN distributes winter aid to Afghans The United Nations World Food Program has already distributed nearly 2,500 tons of food to 33,000 households in several Afghan provinces, including Herat, Faryab and Jawzjan, the UN said in a statement. "What we are trying to do is try to reduce the hardship placed upon households, particularly where damage has been done to their dwellings through avalanches or excessive snowfalls that caused the collapse of buildings," World Food Program Country Director Rick Corsino said at a press briefing in Kabul.

The United Nations World Food Program has already distributed nearly 2,500 tons of food to 33,000 households in several Afghan provinces, including Herat, Faryab and Jawzjan, the UN said in a statement.

"What we are trying to do is try to reduce the hardship placed upon households, particularly where damage has been done to their dwellings through avalanches or excessive snowfalls that caused the collapse of buildings," World Food Program Country Director Rick Corsino said at a press briefing in Kabul.
