Poor visibility and failure by some participants in traffic to use proper winter equipment for their vehicles have also been cited as the cause for the disruption.

The company's teams were this morning trying to get through to the loop, located in the direction of the town of Nis in southern Serbia, a statement said.

Snowdrifts on some local roads, reaching two meters in height, have also disrupted suburban bus traffic in the area of Nis, causing some urban bus lines to be cut shorter as well.

A pile-up involving about 30 vehicles at the entrance to Nis this morning left 11 persons injured, RTS reported.

The Serbian Interior Ministry (MUP) later announced that it deployed Gerdarmes from the Nis unit to help remove the drivers and passengers from their vehicles.

MUP Emergency Situations Sector chief Predrag Maric said that the 600-meter line that formed near the Nis-Jug exit was due to the pileup and not snowdrifts, and appealed on drivers to use winter tires on their cars.
