A large-scale fire that broke out at the Hilandar monastery grounds several days ago has destroyed a warehouse, workers' quarters, and two vehicles.

New Hilandar fire sets back reconstruction plans
The Serbian Orthodox monastery, founded in 1198 by St. Sava and located on Mt. Athos in Greece, suffered extensive damage in a fire in 2004.Director of the Hilandar Monastery Endowment Milivoj Randjic told the paper that the latest fire represented a setback for the reconstruction plans - but will not halt them.
Randjic said that the blaze that broke out several days ago also destroyed about 300 cubic meters of dry construction timber that was to be used to rebuild the White Residence, and that new timber must now be procured.
The digger and the bulldozer must also be replaced. "For the moment we don't have the money," he explained.
The cause of the new fire remains unknown at this time, while the Greek police believe it originated in one of the construction vehicles and was caused by a short circuit.
Randjic said this was speculation at this time, adding that firefighters reacted quickly to contain and extinguish the blaze, and that nobody was injured.
Around EUR 400,000 will be set aside this year for Hilandar's reconstruction from Serbia's state budge.
Randjic said that the endowment hopes to secure 200,000 more from other sources.
The 2004 fire destroyed more than half of the monastery's complex, including monastic quarters, some of which dated back to the 14th century, and four chapels. So far, half of the damaged premises have been repaired and are already in use.
