President honors liberators of Belgrade
The president wrote in the memorial book:"Serbia is once again facing temptations, but each of us, while making decisions, has before them your deeds and your sacrifice, we will not make mistakes. We must not."
The Belgrade operation was launched on September 21 and lasted until October 22, 1944. October 20 is marked as Liberation Day.
About 3,000 members of the People's Liberation Army of Yugoslavia and about 1,000 members of the Soviet Red Army died during the fighting. Belgrade was under Nazi German occupation for 1,287 days during the Second World War.
A number of events will be held on Tuesday to mark Liberation Day, including the unveiling of a relief sculpture honoring JNA General Konstantin Koca Popovic (1908-1992).
