West Nile virus situation in Serbia "under control"

Pelemis said there was "no reason for worry or alarm, especially bearing in mind this is a mild disease during which 80 percent of patients exhibit no symptoms."

The elderly and those with a compromised immune system are most at risk, especially patients who suffer from serious chronic diseases, the doctor explained. He also said that there was no medication targeting this virus, "as is the case with most viruses."

Instead, the doctors treat West Nile virus infection symptoms - fever, muscle pain, respiratory and kidney problems.

Speaking about a special body formed by the Health Ministry, Pelemis said it is tasked with prevention and elimination of the main carriers of the virus - i.e., mosquitoes, and that measures already taken to this effect have yielded results.

Lastly, the doctor advised citizens to stay away from stagnant waters and areas infested with mosquitoes.
