New law on protection of psychiatric patients

The Serbian parliament has adopted a law on the protection of persons suffering from mental disorders.

BELGRADE The Serbian parliament has adopted a law on the protection of persons suffering from mental disorders. The new legislation defines "more closely" the conditions of involuntary commitment in psychiatric institutions. New law on protection of psychiatric patients Under the new law, prevention of mental disorders, care, treatment and rehabilitation of persons with mental disorders will primarily take place in local health-care centers. Treatment in psychiatric institutions will only be applied in those cases when it is the only or the best way to provide the needed medical care, Health Care Minister Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic said during the debate. She said involuntary commitment is now possible "only if a patient presents a danger to themselves or others." The patient can only be held for a limited amount of time, and a judge must start proceedings within three days, at the hospital where the patient is being treated, said the minister. Tanjug
