BELGRADE The Journalists' Association of Serbia (UNS) issued a proclamation on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day. It underscored that the journalists and journalism in Serbia are in the most difficult economic position in recent history, and that media freedoms in the country are at risk. UNS proclamation on World Press Freedom Day At the invitation of the UNS, as part of the initiative “Five Minutes of Thunderous Silence”, the media in Serbia stopped their broadcasts from before noon on Friday, when the proclamation of the Association was read. But only B92 and Studio B outlets interrupted their program and read the proclamation today. “The UNS is primarily requesting from the new government to substantiate its rhetorical willingness to withdraw from the ownership in the media with legal guarantees,” the UNS noted in its statement made earlier. The UNS also notes that journalists and editors in the largest media houses are more and more often accountable to marketing managers, PR professionals, so as to not jeopardize the interests of their companies and political patrons. The UNS offers support to the Commission tasked with investigating the murders of journalists, believing that until the light is shed on the crimes against reporters and media workers, freedom of media in Serbia will remain at risk.
