The 70th anniversary of a WWII raid, carried out by occupying Hungarian fascist forces in southern Backa, northern Serbia, was marked today. The Hungarians killed and threw several thousands of people - Serbs, Jews and Roma - under the ice of the Danube and Tisa Rivers in 1942.The massacre culminated in the killings in the town of Novi Sad. Commemoration for WWII fascist raid victims Today, the village of Curug marked 70 years since the infamous raid that took place in the South Backa District in January 1942. Vojvodina's parliament speaker Sandor Egeresi, deputy prime minister of Vojvodina's government Ana Tomanova- Makanova, Hungarian Ambassador to Belgrade Oszkar Nikowitz, a number of citizens and around 100 priests of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) attended the service in commemoration of those killed in the raid. According to the data released by the Memorial Society 'Raid 1942', the raid conducted in the Sajkaska area and other towns and villages of the South Backa District, left 12,500 people killed, including 80 children up to 15 years old. Bishop Irinej of Backa, together with seven SPC bishops, held a memorial service for the victims of the raid at Curug's Temple of Holy Ascension. Following the service, the wreaths were laid at the storehouse in the center of the village where the people were killed during the raid. At the kindergarten, a memorial gathering for the murdered children was held, during which a documentary on the raid in the South Backa District was screened. Today, the village of Čurug marked 70 years since the infamous raid that took place in the South Bačka District in January 1942.
