Many Serbian citizens celebrated International Workers’ Day outside, with great weather and barbequing helping to ring in the holiday. However, there were several fights resulting from the excessive consumption of alcohol and ensuing rowdiness, the Belgrade emergency medical center told B92. Barbeques, nature, minor incidents on May Day Ambulance spokesperson Nada Macura told B92 that doctors had much more work than they usually have over the weekend, mostly interventions due to excessive alcohol abuse. There were several fights reported at popular Belgrade nature resorts in Kosutnjak and Avala, but no serious injuries. “These were basic injuries that result from fights—head injuries, injuries of the extremities, nothing significant,” Macura said, adding that there were no conflicts in which fire arms or knives were used. Traffic jams were also significant in Belgrade on Saturday afternoon. While most spent their days enjoying the weather and holiday, less than 1,000 people showed up to protests for worker rights in Belgrade and other major cities in Serbia. (Tanjug archive)
