Roman Catholic Archbishop of Belgrade Stanislav Hocevar on Wednesday evening served Christmas Eve mass at St. Antun's church in the capital. Hocevar told worshipers that the night preceding the holiday of the birth of Jesus Christ carries in itself a permanent mark that shows all people are a part of the community of life and love. Christmas celebrated in Serbia Hocevar welcomed President Boris Tadic, Minister of Religions Bogoljub Sijakovic, government representatives and representatives of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC). He pointed out that Christmas is an event, for all Christians, in which they are all reborn, surrounded by the Love of God. "The birth of Jesus is a permanent mark of life, and that is why the Catholic Church is struggling to emphasize the strength of birth and love, and forbids violent termination of life or abortions," Hocevar said. While Serbia's Catholics and Protestants celebrate Christmas according to the Gregorian calendar, a majority of Serbians will mark the holiday on January 7, according to the Julian calendar used by the Orthodox Church.
