Novkovic confirmed that he, together with dozens of other police officers, had participated in collecting the bodies of the murdered members of the Berisha family, but added he had not seen them being murdered. He also testified that he had not heard the first accused, Radojko Repanovic, former commander of the Suva Reka police station, ever give orders for the execution of any civilians. The indictment names Repanovic, his assistant Nenad Jovanovic, former commander of the Nis special police unit Radoslav Mitrovic, Suva Reka police officers Sladjan Cukaric, Miroslav Petkovic, Zoran Petkovic, Ramiz Papic, and State Security Agency member Milorad Nisavic. According to the indictment, the Suva Reka police officers shot dead several elderly members of the Berisha family on March 26, 1999, detaining the remaining men, women and children in the Kalabrija pizza parlor, into which they then proceeded to throw two hand grenades. As the bodies were taken out, the defendants allegedly killed anyone showing signs of life. The Hague defendant, former police general Vlastimir Djordjevic, ordered the transfer of the bodies from the first grave located in the military range in Prizren in refrigerator trucks to be reburied in a mass grave in Batajnica. At the beginning of the trial on October 2, 2006, all the defendants pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
